A systems designer works under the direction of a project manager or systems architect and is central to the process of designing, developing and implementing the clearly defined requirements of a new information system. The role involves planning and designing information systems that integrate hardware, software and communication technologies. There are a range of opportunities in sectors as diverse as finance, retail, communications and government.
It is important to be aware that job descriptions in IT are not as standardized as in some other industries. People with this job title may perform different roles in different organizations. Depending on the size and nature of the organization, some or all of the following work activities may be undertaken. They assist with or leading systems analyses, costing and bidding activities, assessing the brief provided by the customer and systems/business analyst once a contract for a system has been awarded, completing a requirements analysis to ascertain the needs of the end user or customer, consulting with management to ensure agreement on system principles, working closely with programmers and a variety of end users to ensure technical compatibility and user satisfaction, planning and designing information systems, using techniques such as structured analysis, data modeling and information engineering, determining hardware, software and network requirements in order to set up or alter the system.
They also indulge in developing, documenting and revising system design procedures, test procedures and quality standards, creating an architectural design with the necessary specifications for the hardware, software, data and staff resources, writing progress reports, testing and evaluating the systems functionality to ensure successful integration; coordinating the the installation of software and systems, ensuring that implementation meets customer requirements and is aligned to the system roadmaps and technical architecture. In recent years, systems designers have also played a key role in the development of websites and networks.
